UAE's first nuclear plant will be delayed for one year

(MENAFN) The Emirati planned nuclear plant, the Barakah plant starting operations will be delayed as the company set up to run it had not received an operating license.

The world's largest single nuclear project will deliver up to a quarter of the UAE's electricity when completed around 2020 and it is led by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).

However, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) said that work on the first reactor had been completed but Nawah, the ENEC-KEPCO joint venture set to run the plant, had not yet received an operating licence from the UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).

ENEC said: "FANR is conducting a...review of the operating licence application...and numerous inspections of construction and operational readiness."
