Omani OPWP awards Singaporean firm USD250m water project

(MENAFN) Oman's state-owned Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) announced it has awarded a consortium led by the Singaporean Hyflux Ltd and National Power and Water Co a USD250 million contract for the development of seawater desalination in Qurayyat, south of the capital Muscat, Times of Oman reported.

OPWP said that the water project is going to be a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant with a designed capacity of 200.000 cubic meters per day of water, and that it will be the third independent water project in Oman, after Sur and Ghubra IWPs, with expectations that this project will enhance the availability of water in the Muscat Governorate.

OPWP said that this is one of a series of water desalination projects planned by the state-owned company to increase the overall capacity of desalinated water in Oman from the current 670.000 square meter per day to 1.300.000 square meter per day by year 2020.

OPWP said that under the contract, Hyflux will provide turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), a contract valued at USD210 million, as well as operations and maintenance of the plant, with the company saying that the project is scheduled to commence commercial operation by May, 2017 under a 20-year water purchase agreement with OPWP.
