UK Barclays charged over illegal loan to Qatari investors

(MENAFN) Barclays' operating subsidiary has been charged for providing an illegitimate loan to investors from Qatar.

The UK's Serious Fraud Office has explained the illegal loan to have been put to support its shares when the banking crisis was striking.

In a statement, the SFO declared "the charges relate to financial assistance Barclays Bank Plc gave to Qatar Holding LLC between 1 October and 30 November 2008, which was in the form of a $3 billion loan for the purpose of directly or indirectly acquiring shares in Barclays Plc."
