Egypt to accelerate growing rice in 2019

(MENAFN) The Egyptian Agriculture Ministry is imposing this season a hike in the cultivation of rice to reach 1.1 million acres compared to the 800,000 acres grown in 2018.

Egypt' Agriculture Ministry reached the decision as part of a wider plan for the country to witness cuts in its import bill.

Back in 2018, Egypt started importing rice with an aim to save water since it usually recorded a surplus in the crop.

A decision was made last year for a raise on illicit rice cultivation fines along with an order that only allows planting 724,000 feddans.
