    S. Sudan targets food self-sufficiency in 3 years

(MENAFN) South Sudan has set a target to turn into a self-sufficient country when it comes to food by 2022, and transform into a food exporter by 2024.

Agriculture and food security minister Onyoti Adigo Nyikwec stated "if there is peace, with the rate of people going for farming, and the rate of people being trained in modern farming, we think that after two or three years we will be self sufficient and in another five years we will be exporting."

Even though the economic condition witnessed in South Sudan is "very dire", it did not reach the level of famine, the minister noted.

Nyikwec added "it is in the stage of major food crisis, but also threat of hunger this year [because of] lack of rain last year."
