Mount Lebanon almond farmers suffer 80 percent losses

(MENAFN) Mount Lebanon is struggling with challenges in its agriculture, as almond farmers suffered as much as 80 percent of losses in 2019.

Losses are a result of violent storms that struck Lebanon during the winter season, with heavy rain falling until the spring season in April.

Several farmers in Mount Lebanon are heavily dependent on their jobs in agriculture as a living, marking a great danger from those losses in agricultural produce.

Chouf farmer Ghazi Abou Khzam commented "at first, we were very optimistic about the heavy rain this year. But the rain that fell by the end of March and the beginning of April with strong winds and high humidity caused fungal diseases for almond and peach trees."

Abou Khzam added "we still have around 15 to 20 percent of our produce."
