    Oman slaps selective taxes on commodities

    (MENAFN) Oman launched a campaign to introduce selective taxes on a number of products consisting of tobacco and drinks.

    Effective Saturday, under retail prices, the GCC nation imposed 100 percent tax on tobacco along with its derivatives, alcoholic beverages and pork.

    Meanwhile, a 50 percent tax was slapped on carbonated beverages as the General Secretariat of Taxation at the Ministry of Finance issued on its site.

    A private sector worker by the name of Wahab al-Zadjali commented: "I bought a soda can of 330 ml at around 150 baisas (0.39 U.S. dollars) and today it is 225 baisas and 400 baisas are sold in small cafes."
