49 percent decline in Moroccan cereal output

(MENAFN) Morocco's ministry of agriculture unveiled a 49 percent decline on annual basis in cereal output in the country to stand at 5.2 million tonnes during the crop year 2018-19.

In a report, the ministry attributed the sharp decrease to weak rainfall which hit an average of 290.5 mm by the end of May 2019, to mark a 23 percent drop.

Cereal import requirements in Morocco during the marketing year 2019-2020 are projected to reach 8.2 million tonnes, an increase of roughly 30 percent and around 15 percent above average.

To meet its consumption needs, Morocco is depending mostly on the import of wheat.
