70 illicit immigrants saved off Libyan coast

(MENAFN) A Coast Guard patrol saved 70 illicit immigrants off Libya’s Western coast, said the Libyan Navy on Wednesday, Oct. 13.

According to the Libyan Navy, the immigrants had stayed at sea for three days and were going to drown when the patrol saved them.

It noted that the saved immigrants comprised 11 women and seven kids, further saying that they were moved to Tripoli Naval Base, given humanitarian and medical aid, and taken to the anti-illegal immigration department.

The nation has been undergoing insecurity and disorder since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, turning Libya into a preferred point of departure for unlawful immigrants who want to traverse the Mediterranean Sea to European shores.
