Riyadh Starts Initial Phase of Ambitious Public Transport Project
(MENAFN) The Royal Commission of Riyadh City has announced the launch of the first phase of the Riyadh bus service, under the King Abdulaziz Project for Riyadh Public Transport. The first phase includes more than 340 buses operating on 15 routes, with a total of 633 stations and stops within the Riyadh Buses network. The network will eventually cover 86 routes and encompass 1,900 km after all five phases become operational by the end of 2024. The total value of the project is estimated to be USD22.5 billion, and it is expected to reduce the number of car trips by approximately 250,000 trips per day.
The public transport project is one of the strategic projects aimed at serving the city's mobility needs, enhancing the connectivity of parts of the capital, and raising the level of quality of life for its residents and visitors. The project includes an integration of metro trains and buses, with more than 800 buses and over 2,900 stations. The Riyadh metro, which is part of the project, will have six tracks with 85 stations, covering a total length of 176 km.
The first phase of the project is being launched with an online portal for passengers to know the bus routes and purchase tickets for Riyadh buses. Passengers can purchase a trip ticket on board Riyadh buses for SR4 ($1.07), valid for two hours from the first login on one of the buses or by activating the ticket through the application.
The transport sector in Saudi Arabia has witnessed massive improvements under the national initiative Vision 2030. The launch of the Riyadh bus service and the Riyadh metro is part of the Kingdom's efforts to promote sustainable and efficient public transport systems. The new national airline, Riyadh Air, which is wholly owned by the Public Investment Fund, is also expected to enable Riyadh to become a gateway to the world and a global destination for transportation, trade, and tourism. The airline is expected to add USD20 billion to the Kingdom's non-oil gross domestic product growth and create more than 200,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The launch of the first phase of the Riyadh bus service is a significant step towards achieving the Kingdom's vision of promoting sustainable and efficient public transport systems. The ambitious project is expected to transform the way people travel within the city, reduce traffic congestion, and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors. The integration of metro trains and buses, along with the online portal for passengers, is expected to make the system user-friendly and accessible to all. The project is also expected to create job opportunities and promote economic growth in the Kingdom.
