Qatargas Shares Marine Biodiversity Projects at Workshop with Stakeholders
(MENAFN) Qatargas recently presented its marine biodiversity projects to a wide range of stakeholders during a workshop hosted jointly with Qatar University at the Aquatic Fisheries Research Center (AFRC) in Ras Matbakh. The forum provided an opportunity for environmental and marine scientists, researchers, and practitioners from various organizations, including Qatargas, Qatar University, and other energy sector companies, to share their expertise and best practices.
During the inaugural session of the workshop, Qatargas highlighted its legacy of environmental initiatives aimed at preserving Qatar's marine biodiversity. The company showcased a range of projects focused on the essential role of coral in protecting the country's vulnerable coastline while providing a sustainable habitat for diverse populations of fish, sea urchins, algae, and flora and fauna. As the world's premier LNG company, Qatargas recognizes its environmental obligation beyond regulatory requirements and towards environmental sustainability, with a focus on protecting the country's rich marine biodiversity. This is an important element of the company's long-term environmental strategy and a key enabler to the Environmental Development Pillar of the Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030 and Qatar National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2015-2025.
Qatargas has relocated over 12,000 pieces of live coral from nearshore pipelines to offshore protected areas since 2007. The company has also deployed over 1,200 artificial reef modules, which were locally fabricated using an environmentally friendly low pH concrete mix. These modules were installed at recipient sites following comprehensive Marine Environmental Assessments (MEAs).
The workshop provided a unique opportunity for stakeholders to collaborate and learn from each other, sharing expertise and best practices to protect Qatar's marine biodiversity. Through the forum, Qatargas demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible business practices. The company's efforts to preserve marine biodiversity have a significant impact on the local ecosystem and contribute to the country's long-term sustainability goals. By working together, stakeholders can continue to promote environmental stewardship and protect the rich biodiversity of Qatar's marine environment for generations to come.
