Saudi Arabia, Dutch Company Cooperate to Boost Indoor Farming

(MENAFN) In a bid to reduce its dependence on imported leafy crops, Saudi Arabia has partnered with Dutch food products supplier Plantlab to set the highest international indoor farming standards for local production. The move is in line with the country's Vision 2030 goals, which aim to improve food security and promote the diversification of domestic exports.

Under the agreement, agricultural firms in the Kingdom, such as Alrasheed Greenhouses, will collaborate with Plantlab to enhance the production efficiency of indoor farming, restrict irrigation water and energy consumption, and trade foreign technology. The partnership also aims to develop indoor farms using locally manufactured materials, which will shift the Saudi industrial sector's paradigm.

The Saudi-Dutch collaboration is a reflection of the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture's efforts to increase agricultural production in greenhouses. The ministry has planned SR4 billion (USD1.1 billion) worth of investments until 2025 to this end. The undersecretary of MEWA, Ahmed Al-Ayada, attended the partnership ceremony at the ministry's headquarters in Riyadh.

Alrasheed Greenhouses, one of the largest agricultural production and consultancy firms in Saudi Arabia, is known for its dedication to food safety and biocontrol programs. The company manages almost 75 hectares of greenhouses and develops environmentally responsible agricultural schemes, delivers agro-support services, and renders technical advice while maintaining quality and sustainability.

Plantlab, on the other hand, owns the largest indoor farming facility designed for research and development. The Dutch company sees the partnership's potential to enhance the agricultural sector in the Kingdom, particularly in the indoor farming sector.

By adhering to the highest international indoor farming standards, the partnership seeks to limit the importation of leafy greens into the Saudi market. This move is crucial for improving the country's food security and promoting domestic exports diversification. The Saudi-Dutch collaboration will also pave the way for enhancing production efficiency, conserving irrigation water and energy consumption, and trading foreign technology. The partnership is part of the Kingdom's efforts to increase agricultural production in greenhouses, and it will also shift the Saudi industrial sector's paradigm by using locally manufactured materials to develop indoor farms.
