Iran Leads the Region in Horticultural Production, Aims to Increase Exports
(MENAFN) Iran's agricultural and horticultural production has made it the leading producer of garden products in the region, according to Reza Nourani, chairman of the Iran Fruit Union. Despite facing water scarcity and consecutive years of drought, the country has maintained its position as the top producer of agricultural products in the region, with a high potential for further growth. To increase exports, Nourani stressed the need for adopting policies that take advantage of the country's high capacities in agricultural and horticultural production.
Mohammad-Mehdi Boroumandi, the deputy agriculture minister for horticulture affairs, emphasized the importance of horticulture in Iran's agriculture sector. He noted that researchers agree that horticulture creates more employment and brings in good foreign currency income, making it a valuable sector for development. To meet the country's growing demand for agricultural products, Boroumandi highlighted the need to increase the capacity of agricultural production and to renovate gardens as part of the ministry's programs.
Boroumandi also underscored the role of farmers and gardeners in maintaining food security in Iran. Apart from four tropical fruits, the country is self-sufficient in providing other agricultural products. Despite facing climatic and economic constraints, the Ministry of Agriculture has successfully managed to earn foreign currency and meet domestic needs, achieving good success in the field of food security.
In January, Boroumandi announced that the Agriculture Ministry is working to manage production by identifying new export target markets. The ministry aims to increase production per surface unit by implementing regular programs. With their high potential for growth and the value of horticulture for employment and foreign currency income, Iran's agricultural and horticultural sectors hold promise for further development and exports.
