(MENAFN) The General Authority of Statistics has reported an 82 percent surge in passengers to 88 million in Saudi Arabia in 2022 compared to the previous year, thanks to the impressive recovery of the aviation sector after the pandemic. King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah emerged as the busiest airport in Saudi Arabia, handling 32 million passengers, followed by King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with 27 million passengers, and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam with 10 million passengers.

The report also revealed that the average number of daily flights arriving and departing at international airports was 131.29, and at domestic airports was 5.94. This increase in air travel has also led to a surge in ancillary companies, with the number of companies involved in air transport activities increasing by 20 percent to 1,443.

The improving employment scenario in the sector was also highlighted in the Air Transport Statistics Publication. The report revealed that the number of female employees in these companies increased by 70% to 4,000 in 2022 compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the headcount of male employees rose by 38 percent to 28,000.

The private aviation sector also saw a surprising increase, with flights on these aircraft rising by 41 percent to 64,000 in 2022. The report stated that King Khalid International Airport recorded the highest number of private flights in 2022, with a 32 percent increase compared to other airports.

Commercial flights held the majority of air travel, with 701,000 flights during the period under review, an increase of 41 percent over the previous year. Meanwhile, international air freight also saw an uptick, reflecting the country's growing economy. It increased by 12 percent to 559,000 tons in 2022 from 2021. The report added that the Netherlands registered the highest number of international cargo departures for 2021 and 2022.

Overall, the surge in air travel in Saudi Arabia is a positive sign for the country's economy, indicating that the aviation sector is recovering well from the pandemic. It is expected that this trend will continue in the coming years, leading to further growth and development in the sector.
