Iran Ranks Third Globally in Honey Production, Aims to Increase Output

(MENAFN) During the past Iranian calendar year 1401, Kohgiluyeh Boyer-Ahmad province produced an impressive 1,700 tons of honey, according to Reza Behnam-Pour, the deputy director of livestock production improvement of the province’s Agriculture Department. This amount was produced in 2,700 bee farms across the province, and other regions also contributed to the country's honey production. Last year, different regions of the province produced 333 kg of royal jelly cream, 12,000 kg of pollen, and 53,000 kg of wax.

The latest census conducted by the Agriculture Ministry revealed that there are more than 213,183 bee colonies in different regions of the province. Currently, 3,700 people are working in the beekeeping industry of Kohgiluyeh Boyer-Ahmad, highlighting the importance of this industry to the local economy.

Iran is a significant contributor to the global honey industry, ranking third in the world in the number of apiaries as stated by the chairman of the Animal Science Research Institute of Iran (ASRI), Mokhtar Mohajer. However, Iran's rank in honey production is dynamic, ranging between fourth and sixth place in the world. Based on data released by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Iran is the third-largest producer of honey in the world.

Mohajer believes that the country's honey production should be increased by three to four kilograms per colony to meet the increasing demand for honey. He announced that the Seventh National Development Plan (2022-2026) aims to increase honey production by at least three to four kilograms per colony, depending on the diversity of plants and the area of pastures in the country. The Animal Science Research Institute chairman also shared that annually, 8,300 kilograms of royal jelly, 406 tons of pollen, 2,536 tons of beeswax, 247 tons of propolis, and 3,917 grams of bee venom are produced in the country.

Overall, Iran's honey industry is a significant contributor to the country's economy, providing employment opportunities for thousands of people. As the demand for honey increases, the government is committed to increasing production to meet this demand and maintain Iran's position as a major player in the global honey market.
