Morocco Considers Importing Fuel from Russia Amid Western Sanctions
(MENAFN) Morocco is considering the possibility of importing fuel from Russia as Western sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine continue. Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch announced during a parliamentary session on Monday that Morocco is likely to import Russian fuel, just as it imports Russian coal. He added that nothing prevents Morocco from importing grain from Russia or Ukraine either. However, the premier cited that some international banks refuse to finance imports from Russia, which could pose a challenge for the country.
The announcement by the Moroccan government comes amid Western sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. These sanctions have affected Russia's trade relations with many countries, including those in North Africa. Last month, three opposition parties in Morocco announced plans to form a parliamentary committee to investigate Russian fuel imports, citing a lack of transparency. This move reflects growing concerns in the country about the impact of Western sanctions on trade relations with Russia.
In March, Moroccan Economy Minister Nadia Fettah Alaoui denied reports about banning Russian oil imports, indicating that the country's trade relations with Russia were unaffected by the sanctions. However, the recent announcement by Prime Minister Akhannouch suggests that Morocco is now considering alternative sources of fuel, including imports from Russia. Morocco's consumption of petroleum products in 2021 reached 11.2 million tons, according to official data. The country's decision to explore importing fuel from Russia reflects the challenges it faces in maintaining its energy supply amid Western sanctions and trade restrictions.
