Iran Aims to Become West Asia's Gas Hub with Resumed Imports from Turkmenistan

(MENAFN) Iran is strategically positioning itself as a gas hub in West Asia through the resumption of gas imports from Turkmenistan, according to an energy market expert quoted by Shana news agency. The move is seen as a significant step in promoting Iran's standing in the global gas market and expanding its share in gas trade. Hamid Hosseini, the expert, emphasized that any form of energy exchange with neighboring countries enhances Iran's position and strengthens its presence in the gas trade arena.

Hosseini also highlighted the positive impact of expanding gas trade with neighboring nations on Iran's domestic energy transmission. He explained that such developments improve the distribution and supply of energy within the country. The expert noted that during the past winter, Iran experienced a gas shortage, particularly in the northeastern region near Turkmenistan. By resuming gas imports from Turkmenistan, Iran can partially address its gas demand and mitigate potential shortages in the upcoming year.

Furthermore, Hosseini emphasized the additional benefits of gas imports from Turkmenistan, particularly in supporting the supply of feedstock to Iran's petrochemical complexes. The enhanced gas trade with Turkmenistan will contribute to ensuring a stable and reliable supply of raw materials for the country's petrochemical industry.

The analyst expressed regret that Iran had not sufficiently developed its gas sector relations with Turkmenistan in previous years. However, the current administration, the 13th incumbent administration, seized the opportunity and successfully reached an agreement with Turkmenistan by settling its outstanding gas debt to the neighboring country. This positive step has paved the way for renewed collaboration and strengthened energy ties between the two nations.

By prioritizing energy cooperation with Turkmenistan and resuming gas imports, Iran aims to solidify its position as a vital player in the West Asian gas market. Becoming a gas hub holds strategic significance for Iran, as it not only enhances the country's energy security but also opens up opportunities for increased regional cooperation and economic growth. As Iran continues to leverage its gas resources and strengthen energy partnerships, it is poised to play a significant role in shaping the dynamics of the gas trade in the region and beyond.
