Turkey is not seeking IMF assistance in wake of COVID-19 outbreak

(MENAFN) According to the director of the fund's European department, Turkey and Russia are not looking for IMF assistance in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak since non-EU emerging countries in Central and Eastern Europe are as well.

Poul Thomsen said that, the IMF is now facing simultaneous demands for assistance from the biggest number of countries in its history.

He added that, "we are dramatically streamlining our internal rules and procedures so as to be able to respond with the speed, agility, and scale called for by this unprecedented peacetime challenge".

As the coronavirus spread to tens of countries, many international institutions, including the IMF, declared new financial packages to help countries tackle the virus' effects on their markets.
