Iraq expects local production of Wheat to increase in current harvest season

(MENAFN) Since the beginning of the harvest season last April, at least 1.09 million tons of domestic wheat has been sold to Iraq, according to a statement issued Saturday by the country's grain board.

During the April-May harvest season, the local output of wheat is expected to amount to 6 million tons, based on official figures released by Iraq's agriculture ministry.

Over rising fears that the food supply chain would be interrupted due to the global measures to battle against the coronavirus pandemic, Iraqi authorities announced in March that the country, which is a leading Middle East grain importer, would have to import 1 million tons of wheat this year to increase funds.
