Beirut Suffers from Protests, Poverty
(MENAFN)LBCI local TV channel reported that sit-ins were held on Wednesday, October 14th, in Beirut Lebanon, in protest of the declining living conditions, and the plan by the Central Bank of Lebanon to increase medicine prices, wheat, food, and fuel.
Protesters stopped all traffic movement all over the country, when they called out for the configuration of a council able to deal with the ominous situation of the country.
Bechara Asmar, the head of the General Confederation of Lebanese Workers asked for the configuration of a council while holding all politicians responsible for their previous mistakes. He also egged on all the Lebanese to support the confederation of Lebanese workers to restore people's rights.
Lebanon has been experiencing its worst economic and financial emergency, along with shortage of foreign currency reserves, that lead to their banks enforcing unofficial capital control on withdrawals in Lebanese pounds, while the U.S. dollar in not even accessible at banks.
The World Bank released that the poverty rate in the country is more than 55 percent, noting that those who still have a job, have lost almost 80 percent of their salaries.
