Turkey at risk of hunger
(MENAFN) The forestry and agriculture minister expressed concern on Friday, October 16th, about Turkey's food production. According to him, Turkey wastes 19 million tons of food, which is the equivalent to one-fifth of the country's food production.
The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) held an online meeting, in relation to the World Food Day, where Bekir Pakdemirli said; "If we can prevent the food waste by only 2 percent in our country, we can meet the one-year living expenses of approximately 360,000 families"
He also added that the pandemic made access to food a critical matter, and that Turkey made undertook some inventive steps in the agriculture sector, like a digital agriculture platform, the GenBank, Ancestry seed schemes, and smart agriculture implementations.
The FAQ's representative in Turkey, Viorel Gutu, stated that hunger has been increasing worldwide since 2014, along with obesity rates. While almost 2 billion people don't have access to enough food, which is why production methods, and consumption of food must change now.
