    Turkey: consumers' payment online increase

    (MENAFN) Interbank Card Center (BKM) in Turkey released on Wednesday, October 21st, that the overall value of online card payments for this September has increased 48 percent in comparison with the same month of the previous year.

    The BKM attributes the reason of the increase to the recent Covid-19 outbreak, they also stated that the augmented number for last month amounts to USD3.3 billion (25 billion Turkish liras), noting that online shopping is much more popular now.

    Using online cards to pay for things grew especially in the food-market, by 196 percent, while it also increased in the electronics section by 146 percent in comparison with the same period of time of the previous year.

    They also noted that this September, expenses covered by debit and credit cards went up 25 percent year-on-year, which is equivalent to USD14 billion (106.4 billion liras).
    Making the share of online expenditures in total card payments increased to 23 percent, that is 18 percent higher than September 2019.

    By the end of September the figure of credit cards used was 73.9 million, while 181.1 million debit cards were used.
