    Turkey expands railway transport

    (MENAFN) The transport and infrastructure minister has declared that Turkey will be enlarging its railway network to 16,675 kilometres (10,361 miles) by 2023, due to new investments in high-speed trains and conventional lines.

    Adil Karaismailoglu has stated that they are working on improving the geographical space of Turkey's railways, during a speech he gave on Wednesday, October 21st, that marks the introductory to Turkish Railway Summit.

    He added that the government's goal for their 2023 vision is to increase the stake of railways in passenger transportation from 1.3 percent to 3.8 percent.

    He highlighted: "We are working at a great speed to produce national technologies to rehabilitate our existing lines and develop service-oriented, smart and value-added transportation."

    He declared that they have already finished work on 403 new generation national freight wagons, and they still want to expand to 100 more.

    "By 2023, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway line connecting Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia will contribute to the trade target of $15 billion set by Turkey and Azerbaijan," he underlined while speaking of Turkey's progression in the railway transportation sector.

    He ended his statement with the fact that Turkey has invested 169.2 billion liras (USD21.5 billion) in railway transportation since 2003 till 2020.
