    Iran needs to import wheat in current year

    (MENAFN)Iran will need to import wheat in this Iranian year since harsh drought has significantly declined the production of the strategic crop, according to Secretary of the Iranian Parliament’s Agriculture Committee.

    IRNA quoted ZabihollahA’zami as saying that “Although our strategic wheat stocks are currently in good condition, it must be put on the agenda to meet the future needs through imports.”

    The Agriculture Ministry data, so far 4,463,000 tons of wheat was purchased from farmers that is estimated to stand at a maximum of 4,600,000 tons, A’zami said, saying that this year’s production is lower than the last year.

    He further declared that the country’s minimum demand for wheat in the current year stood at six million tons and declared: “latest statistics show that the country may need to import eight million tons of wheat this year.”
