Qatar to construct ship fleet, seeking to be worldwide gas power

(MENAFN) Qatar wants to become a worldwide gas power by spending in "hundreds of ships" that can ship liquefied natural gas (LNG), in agreement with Qatar’s energy minister on Tuesday.

The Gulf nation is in the process of creating “the largest fleet of ships in the world” to export LNG, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, who is also the head and boss of QatarEnergy, informed German daily Bild.

A sum of €20 billion (USD20.7 billion) was invested in the fleet, which is now being constructed in China and South Korea. There will be "hundreds of ships" that would make Qatar a worldwide gas power, he further noted.

Earlier in the day, al-Kaabi inked a deal with Germany which would yearly ship 2 million tons of LNG to the European nation effective 2026.

"This is the first deal we've ever made in Germany. As you know, there is no (LNG) terminal in Germany. A new one is being built,” he added.

"If you look at the total consumption, this corresponds to around 3% of German gas consumption," he continued.
