PMO: Iranian maritime fleet's volume surpasses 50M tons

(MENAFN) According to Ali-Akbar Safaei, managing director of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), the country's maritime fleet would eventually have a transit capacity of up to 50 million tons, the PMO homepage stated on Sunday.

Our medium-term goal is to move 15 to 20 million tons of cargo per year, and our long-term goal is to move more than 50 million tons per year, for which we must expand our rail infrastructure, according to Safaei.

Since the Islamic Revolution's triumph 44 years ago, the state claims, the capacity of the nation's ports has expanded by 251 million tons.

“The total capacity of the country's ports in 1357 (1978) was 19 million tons, and today the figure has reached more than 270 million tons,” the PMO head added.

He said that the nation's shipping fleet now has an 8.5 million TEU capacity for containers, up from 75,000 TEUs in 1978.
