Turkish Airports Record Significant Passenger Growth in Q1 2023

(MENAFN) Official data released on Wednesday revealed that Turkish airports experienced substantial passenger growth in the first quarter of 2023. According to the State Airports Authority General Directorate, Turkish airports welcomed over 38.9 million passengers, including transit passengers, during the January-March period. This figure represents a 31.5 percent increase from the same period a year ago.

Of the 38.9 million passengers, 18.8 million took domestic flights during the first quarter, reflecting a 17.6 percent rise compared to the same period in the previous year. Meanwhile, the number of passengers on international flights surged significantly by 48.3 percent to 20.2 million.

Moreover, Turkish airports served 436,550 planes, including overflights, in the first quarter of 2023. Istanbul Airport, which welcomed more than 40 percent of total passenger traffic in the country, recorded 16.5 million passengers during the January-March period. Of these passengers, 3.6 million were on domestic routes, while 12.9 million were on international ones. The mega airport also served a total of 113,845 airplanes during the three-month period.

Sabiha Gokcen Airport, located on Istanbul's Anatolian side, was the second-busiest hub during the first quarter, attracting 7.9 million air passengers. This was followed by Antalya Airport in the Turkish Mediterranean resort city, which saw 2.8 million passengers.

On the other hand, the cargo traffic in Turkish airports experienced a decline of 4.6 percent from the same period in the previous year, with nearly 347,072 tons recorded in Q1 2023. Despite this, the significant growth in passenger traffic highlights the continued growth of the Turkish aviation industry.
