Saudi Arabia Aligns Geospatial Studies with UN Framework to Enhance National Capacity

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia is set to enhance its geospatial studies, map production, and marine surveys through alignment with the United Nations (UN) framework in this pioneering field. The General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GASGI) participated in the inaugural meeting of the international advisory committee of its UN counterpart in Deqing, China, between April 20 and 22. During the meeting, the Kingdom presented its experience in developing a national strategy in line with the UN's Global Geospatial Knowledge and Innovation Centre Framework, which integrates location information to plan cities, build infrastructure, and manage natural resources such as water and minerals.

Mohammed Bin Yahya Al Sayel, president of the GASGI, emphasized the importance of the nine strategic pathways outlined in the Integrated Geospatial Information Framework, which cover governance, legal and policy, financial and data standards, innovation, partnerships, capacity and education, and communication and engagement. According to Al Sayel, these pathways provide guidance for addressing challenges in the survey and geospatial information sector. The presentation also highlighted the integration of geospatial and statistical information with satellite data to discover and manage land resources and apply the knowledge in regional planning.

The meeting discussed the proposed agenda and reviewed the experiences of member states. Saudi Arabia signed a deal with the UN last April to offer consultation services in the geospatial survey to boost its national capacity. The GASGI and the UN's Development Program agreed on the third phase of a project that will allow the authority to improve its services and increase public awareness of its operations. Adam Bouloukos, the UNDP's resident representative for Saudi Arabia, stated that the partnership aims to provide consultation services to conduct geospatial works effectively and efficiently, as well as to provide the necessary infrastructure to gather data to support Saudi Vision 2030 and the Kingdom's sustainable development goals.

This alignment with the UN framework in geospatial studies and surveying represents Saudi Arabia's commitment to enhancing its national capacity in this pioneering field. The integration of location information in various sectors such as disaster management, infrastructure development, and natural resource management can help the Kingdom achieve its sustainable development goals outlined in Saudi Vision 2030. Through partnerships and consultation services provided by the UN, the Kingdom can improve its geospatial services and increase public awareness of its operations, ultimately contributing to its economic development and diversification.
