Istanbul Airport Emerges as Europe's Busiest Hub with Significant Increase in Daily Flights
(MENAFN) According to the European Air Navigation Safety Organization (EUROCONTROL), Türkiye's Istanbul Airport has been ranked as the busiest airport in Europe, with an average of 1,446 daily flights during the period of April 26 to May 2 of 2023. This is followed by Amsterdam with 1,314 daily flights, London Heathrow with 1,272 flights, Paris-Charles de Gaulle with 1,245 flights, and Frankfurt with 1,194 flights.
The EUROCONTROL report also revealed that despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, 28,204 flights were carried out daily across Europe, which corresponds to 92 percent of the 2019 level before the outbreak. Moreover, Istanbul Airport and Palma de Mallorca Airport, which serves Majorca, Spain's largest island, were the only two airports among the top 10 that passed the 2019 levels in 2023.
Istanbul Airport's ranking as the busiest airport in Europe is attributed to its significant increase in the number of daily flights by 21 percent compared to 2019 and 24 percent compared to 2022. This growth is indicative of the airport's efforts to expand its operations and attract more airlines and passengers, making it a major hub in the region.
Furthermore, Turkish Airlines, the flag carrier of Türkiye, ranked third among the airlines with the most daily flights in Europe, with a total of 1,521 flights. This highlights the growing importance of Turkish Airlines and Istanbul Airport in the global aviation industry.
The emergence of Istanbul Airport as Europe's busiest hub is a significant achievement for Türkiye, reflecting the country's efforts to invest in its infrastructure and promote its tourism industry. It also underscores the importance of Istanbul as a major transportation hub connecting Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. As the world recovers from the pandemic, Istanbul Airport's growth is expected to continue, contributing to the country's economic development and global standing.
