(MENAFN) Nobakht Ajdari, the deputy head of the Agriculture Department of Ardebil province, has announced that a significant amount of Sabalan honey, totaling 350 tons, was exported during the past Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20. Ajdari highlighted the thriving beekeeping industry in the province, revealing that there are currently 534,000 beehives in operation. The diligent beekeepers of Ardebil collectively produce over 9,000 tons of honey annually, with approximately 1,500 tons consumed locally.

Honey holds great significance in Ardebil province, situated in the northwest of Iran, and is regarded as one of its most cherished local souvenirs. The honey produced in this region, known as Sabalan honey, has garnered international recognition and acclaim. It has been officially registered and established a reputable presence both nationally and internationally.

According to the latest census conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Iran's total honey production is estimated at 136,000 tons. Mohammad Fekri, a board member of the Iran Beekeepers Association, disclosed that West Azarbaijan province leads the country's honey production, contributing over 30,000 tons annually, accounting for more than 22 percent of the nation's total output. Following closely behind are East Azarbaijan, Fars, Ardebil, and Kermanshah provinces, collectively responsible for a substantial portion of Iran's honey production. The remaining 43 percent is distributed across various other provinces.

The consistent export of Sabalan honey from Ardebil province demonstrates the quality and desirability of this regional delicacy. With its rich natural resources and favorable climate, the province serves as an ideal environment for beekeeping activities. The success of the honey industry not only contributes to the local economy but also showcases Iran's potential as a significant player in the global honey market. As the industry continues to flourish, it is expected that the reputation of Sabalan honey and other Iranian honey varieties will further solidify, positioning the country as a prominent honey producer on the international stage.
