Gulf Arab Energy Giants Seek Tech Start-ups to Address Emissions as Oil Production Continues

(MENAFN) In response to increasing pressure to reduce planet-heating pollution, energy giants in the Gulf Arab region are turning to technology start-ups in their search for solutions to remove emissions while sustaining oil production. These oil producers have long touted the capture of carbon before it is released into the atmosphere as a potential solution to global warming. However, their efforts have faced criticism from climate experts who argue that such endeavors risk diverting attention from the urgent need to slash fossil fuel pollution.

Despite the potential of carbon capture technology, there has been limited investment and few operational projects worldwide. As a result, the technology is currently not at the scale necessary to significantly impact global emissions. However, major players in the industry, including Saudi Aramco and the United Arab Emirates' ADNOC, now express optimism that this is about to change. The UAE, as host of this year's climate negotiations, aims to emphasize emissions reduction rather than solely focusing on fossil fuels.

In order to achieve the industry's and countries' goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, embracing carbon capture is seen as crucial. Musabbeh Al Kaabi, ADNOC's executive director of low-carbon solutions, emphasized the significance of carbon capture in achieving these targets. Gulf Arab energy companies recognize that carbon capture technology will play a vital role in their efforts to address emissions while sustaining oil production.

The Gulf Arab region, known for its significant oil reserves, is now recognizing the need to adapt and prioritize emissions reduction. By partnering with tech start-ups, these energy giants hope to find innovative solutions that can effectively capture carbon and contribute to the overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. As the world focuses on combatting climate change, the Gulf Arab energy industry seeks to leverage technology and partnerships to transition toward a more sustainable and low-carbon future, while continuing to meet global energy demands.
