Saudi Arabia's Air Traffic Rebounds with a 42 percent Surge in Passengers in 2023
(MENAFN) Driven by significant growth in the country's travel and tourism sector, Saudi Arabia's air traffic has experienced a robust recovery, witnessing a remarkable rebound in the first four months of 2023. According to a report from the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the number of passengers has surged by 42 percent compared to the same period last year. The total number of passengers reached 35.8 million during the first four months of 2023, compared to 25.3 million in the corresponding period in the previous year.
Moreover, the Kingdom's airports have shown a notable increase in air traffic, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. The growth rate stands at 6.2 percent when compared to the same period in 2019. The passenger volume during this period reached approximately 35.8 million, showing a slight increase from the 33.7 million recorded in 2019. Concurrently, the number of flights has risen by 23.5 percent, with around 263,000 flights recorded, compared to 212,500 flights during the same period last year.
Within the domestic market, the number of passengers has grown by 6.7 percent in the first four months of 2023, reaching 16.3 million passengers, compared to 15.3 million during the same period in the previous year. Notably, the most significant surge has been observed in international flights, with passenger numbers skyrocketing by 95.5 percent to 19.5 million, compared to 10 million passengers in the corresponding period last year.
In a further boost to the aviation industry, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has announced the launch of Riyadh Air, a new airline that will be fully owned by the Public Investment Fund. This initiative reflects the Kingdom's commitment to strengthening the aviation sector and its confidence in the future recovery and growth of air travel.
The impressive rebound in air traffic and passenger numbers not only signifies the revival of the Saudi Arabian travel and tourism sector but also highlights the country's resilience and ability to adapt to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The surge in air travel demonstrates increased confidence among travelers, emphasizing the vital role of aviation in facilitating connectivity, economic growth, and global mobility in Saudi Arabia.
