    Economists warn of Lebanon's wages reduction plan

    (MENAFN) Lebanon's plan to cut wages of public sector workers is expected to cause an economic catastrophe, several Lebanese economists warned.

    Researcher at the American University of Beirut Layal Mansour suggested "the government's plan to cut salaries of public sector employees will cause the disappearance of the middle class in Lebanon."

    Meanwhile, according to the expert, the USD1,327 of salary given to a public sector worker holds a different purchasing power of euros being paid in Europe.

    Mansour added "most of the spending by Lebanese people is focused on necessities that should be provided by the government in the first place, such as electricity, hospitalization, water and education."
