GCC to seek nuclear help from Iran, Iraq

(MENAFN) Gulf Council for Foreign Relations chairman, Dr Mansoor Al Arayedh, said that GCC countries would need their neighbors support to develop safe, secure and advanced nuclear power projects, TradeArabia reported. Al Arayedh explained that the GCC alone could not provide solutions for nuclear energy, safety and security, but would need to go through discussions with Iran, Iraq and other neighboring countries to allow it find solutions to nuclear challenges. He also called for an inspiring Muslim peace project for the 21st century, where nuclear power would be one of its core components, seeking to work together as a European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom)-like corporation. Al Arayedh envisioned a Gulfatom treaty that would be a cornerstone of the peace project. He suggested establishing a science and technology working group in order to address the challenges of nuclear energy, in particular safety, transparency and verification, as well as to grant access to Gulf neighboring countries within the International Atomic Energy Agency safeguard frameworks.
