    Qatar's Kahramaa awards $1.18b contracts

    (MENAFN) The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) awarded contracts worth $1.18 billion for the building of new substations, strengthening existing ones and laying overhead lines and cables, The Peninsula reported. The contracts included upgrading of existing network of 11/66kv to 400kv to accommodate new substations and associated cables and overhead lines which, the minister said, would meet the forecast load growth. The new projects covered laying of extra high-voltage power cables on different routes with voltage levels varying from 33kv to 220kv. As many as 18 new substations will be built and 11 existing ones will be modified and upgraded under the expansion. The work includes the construction of a 400kv substation to meet the requirements of the GCC power grid, the first phase of which connecting Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain is already operational. The new projects also cover the installation of 220kv new cable network and more than 85km of overhead lines.
