UAE telecom watchdog to lessen regulations

(MENAFN) UAE's Telecoms Regulatory Authority (TRA) said that the country's telecom operators would benefit soon from decreased regulation in new product offerings and pricing decisions, Reuters reported. Director General of TRA, Mohamed Al Ghanim, said that the watchdog plans to waive price approvals for some products and permit competitors to introduce packages into the market without needing regulatory approval. Al Ghanim added that the drive for any sector is to make a balance between how much regulations are imposed and how much the TRA wants to encourage operators to increase and the telecom market to grow. He noted that the last five years saw a 20 percent growth on an annual basis in the UAE, adding that there will be less regulation in areas where competition is high. Al Ghanim said that 2010 will also see a shift towards specific consumer protection policies in order to ensure that the marketing campaigns of the operators are more transparent and less misleading.
