Yemen receives $12.9m in aid from EU

(MENAFN) The European Commission announced that it has sent $12.9 million in aid to Yemen as it said that other donors were not stepping up to help the country, despite earlier promises, AP reported. The European Union?s executive body said that the aid has been sent in response to urgent humanitarian needs exacerbated by a lack of support from the international community, it said in a statement. The EU?s money is intended to supply the most immediate needs of the refugee population, the EU's commissioner for emergency relief, Kristalina Georgieva, said. The funds will be spent on shelter, water and sanitation, food and livelihood support, and basic health care and protection, and will be administered by aid groups such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
