Royal Jordanian to launch new African route

(MENAFN) Chief Executive Officer at Royal Jordanian airlines (RJ), Hussein Dabbas, announced that the carrier is planning further expansion into the African market in the upcoming year of 2011, Arabian Business reported. According to Dabbas, RJ launches two new routes each year and revealed that it would start flying to Berlin from June 2011, whereas the second destination the airline is considering would be Lagos, Nigeria. The Amman-based airline already flies to Khartoum in Sudan, Tripoli in Libya and Tunis in Tunisia and Cairo, Alexandria and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, but Nigeria will be its first expansion into Sub-Saharan Africa, Dabbas said. In order to facilitate its growth, RJ is planning to expand its fleet, and was the first Middle East carrier to order a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. It is worth noting that despite the carrier's growth in routes and aircraft, RJ reported that earnings for the first three quarters of 2010 fell by nearly 25 percent as a result of rising fuel and operational costs, however, passenger numbers were up 16 percent and the RJ expects to make a decent profit for the current year, said Dabbas.
