Germany seeks to bolster ties with Iraq

(MENAFN) German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said that his government is seeking stronger economic and political ties with Iraq, Reuters reported. Westerwelle led a group of German lawmakers and business leaders who were in Iraq for a one-day trade trip to meet top leaders, including President Jalal Talabani and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Westerwelle said Germany considers Iraq an important partner, and Germany is determined to continue this support. Germans vigorously opposed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq but began widening relations after President Barack Obama, a Democrat, took over for President George W. Bush, a Republican who pushed for the war.
