Egypt to operate first nuclear plant in 2019

(MENAFN) Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Youniss stated that Cairo will fully operate the country's first nuclear power plant, expected to cost $1.8 billion, by 2019, AP reported. According to Youniss, Egypt will open international bidding for the plant's construction at the end of the year. The minister also noted that Egypt plans to build three more nuclear plants by 2025. President Hosni Mubarak first announced plans to build a number of nuclear power plants in 2007, reviving a program that was publicly shelved in the aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl accident at a Soviet nuclear plant in what is now Ukraine.
