UAE to be linked to Gulf power network by mid-2011

(MENAFN) Adnan Al Mohaisen, Chief Executive of the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA), said that by June 2011, the UAE will be connected to the Gulf's power grid, which currently links Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar, Reuters reported. Last year, Gulf countries completed the first phase of the regional power grid that they hope will help them meet rapidly rising regional demand, and smooth out capacity at peak times to avoid power outages, said Al Mohaisen. Ever since operations started in July 2009, the grid has seen about 200 cross-border power transfers to avoid power outages. However, officials hope it will in the future create a Gulf-wide market to trade power, he said. According to Al Mohaisen, the GCCIA is still considering linking Oman and Egypt to the grid.
