    Sharjah to operate $40.8m bus station by 2014

    (MENAFN) Abdullah Al Zari, Director General of Sharjah Transport, announced that a new $40.8 million central bus station shall be built in the emirate, for city, intercity, and international shuttle service at the Etihad (Union) square in Al Sour area by the end of 2014, Khaleej Times reported. Fabre & Torras Arquitectes, the Spanish engineering consultancy office were appointed to design the scheme, whereas Islamic architecture will be incorporated in the local desert environment, revealed Al Zari. The central bus station, which was initially proposed by a Singaporean consultancy company, will be fully equipped with all the facilities, including banks, shopping centers, as well as exchange and travel agencies, and will be constructed on a total area of 19,000 square meters, he added. In a bid to enhance traffic flow, the main station will have a capacity to hold 80 vehicles at a time, and is expected to provide shuttle service to 17 million passengers in the first year of operation; will be supported with 10 sub-stations, which are set to cover all areas of Sharjah city, said Al Zari.
