Protests causes Dubai to deport Asian workers

(MENAFN) An official said that Dubai authorities decided to deport over fifty Bangladeshi laborers who participated in a strike to ask for an increase in salaries, reported Arab News. Officials said that about 5,000 mostly South Asian workers at the biggest construction company in Dubai, Arabtec Holding, formed a two-week strike to demand a $54 pay increase. The laborers earn about $200 a month for basic jobs and a bit more for more skillful positions. After the deporting decision the other strikers decided to return to their jobs without any pay increases promises. It is worth noting that out of deportation and arrest fears, it is uncommon for migrants laborers to take part in strikes in the UAE.
