    Algeria increases wheat imports

(MENAFN) An official source said that Ahmed Ouyahia, Prime Minister of Algeria, decided to increase the imports of wheat in an attempt to eliminate any conflicts over food prices, which had earlier helped drive out Tunisia's leader and led to protests all over Tunisia, reported Arab News. This decision happened after wheat prices increased to multi-year highs on international markets and out of fears that other regimes in North Africa and the Middle East may end up like Tunisia. The source also said that Algeria has already imported more than 1 million tons of wheat. It is worth noting that so far, Algeria had decreased the cost of some food products and increased the amount of soft wheat it provides to the local market by 18 percent.
