Middle East carriers surpass global air traffic growth

(MENAFN) The Director-General and chief executive of The International Air Transport Association (IATA), Giovanni Bisignani, said that Middle East carriers' passenger volume increased by 17.8 percent in 2010, surpassing the 8.2 percent global rise in air traffic, reported Gulf News. Bisignani said that the global air traffic growth was affected by aviation disruptions and flight delays happening as a result of the ash cloud in April, which cost the industry $2 billion, and snowstorms across Europe and North America around the end of 2010. Bisignani said that in the Middle East Gulf carriers like Etihad, Qatar Airways and Emirates, which are steadily taking delivery of new aircrafts, are the main factors behind the strong growth.
