US cancels USD77m defense deal with Libya

(MENAFN) State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls spokesman, Mark C. Toner, said that the agreement for delivering 50 refurbished armored troop carriers to Libya for USD77 million was canceled as the US applied sanctions on the Arab country, reported AP. Toner said that the approved deal was immediately suspended along with the rest of the few defense agreements the US had sealed with Libya. The congress had not been very approving when the deal was previously sealed and even questioned the Obama administration over doing business with the Libyan dictator regime. It is worth noting that an American official said that total military sales to Libya in Obama's first year in Administration dropped to USD17 million, but would have rocketed had the USD77 million deal been completed.
