Saudi studies electricity line to Europe

(MENAFN) Saudi deputy electricity minister, Dr Saleh Alawaji, said that the country is studying a connection to the European electricity grid through a high-voltage line that would allow the Kingdom to export extra electricity to Europe in the winter, reported The National. Alawaji said that determining the feasibility of such a project is not simple as the ministry needs to consider all technical, legal and political aspects of the project, especially that the line in subject is expected to have strong obstacles as it moves over a very long distance. Alawaji said that the Kingdom is looking into electricity exports as it has idle electricity potential in winter. He pointed out that Saudi Arabia can currently save 24 gigawatts in winter compared to the peak of electricity production in summer.
