UAE, Bahrain sign an airspace agreement

(MENAFN) UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority's (GCAA) director general, Saif Mohammed al Suwaidi, said that in order to reduce the pressure from the increasing number of passenger flights to and from the Emirates, the country reached an airspace deal with Bahrain for a new airway, the M600, reported The National. Al Suwaidi added that the inauguration of M600 would lessen traffic congestion, controller and pilot workload; in addition, it would boost airspace capacity that would enhance air traffic safety. He also said that last month, air traffic movements in the UAE rose 6.7 percent from April 2010, reaching an average of 1,860 flights per day, adding that the country's five airline companies, including Emirates Airline and more than 130 other carriers operated the increasing air services It is worth noting that as a result of the Emirates space limitations, the country has embarked on a sustained investment program, and two years ago, the GCAA opened a USD81.6 million air traffic control headquarters at the Sheikh Zayed Centre, which was established to handle projected increases in traffic for the next two decades.
