US military sales to Bahrain up to USD200m

(MENAFN) The US assistant secretary of state for political and military affairs, Andrew Shapiro, said that before Bahrain started oppressing demonstrators in February, in 2010, the US approved USD200 million in military sales from American companies to the country, reported Associated Press. Shapiro added that between the years 2009 and 2010, the US licensed defense sales to its ally increased USD112 million, moreover, two years ago the United States gave the permission for a USD88 million in military exports to Bahrain, where the US Navy's 5th Fleet was located. He also said that the products his country allowed to be exported to Bahrain were aircraft and military electronics, in addition, a year ago, it licensed USD760,000 in exports of rifles, shotguns and assault weapons, where much of these American built weapons were believed to be used against the protestors in Bahrain. It is worth noting that the US would evaluate Bahrain's use of security and military units against peaceful protestors and will take into account any evidence of gross violations of human rights following recent clashes between Bahrain government forces and pro-democracy crowds.
