Pirates get USD12 ransom, free Kuwaiti tanker

(MENAFN) Andrew Mwangura, a Kenya-based former maritime official who works currently as an editor of the Somalia Report confirmed that Somali pirates let go of a Kuwaiti oil tanker after receiving a ransom of twelve million US dollars, reported Reuters. A pirate in the hijacking group, Rashid, stated that the tanker had sailed away. This comes as the latest case of ransoms paid to pirates, a phenomenon that is costing the world USD7 billion to USD12 billion on an annual basis. It is worth noting that the international community has been trying for years to stop such actions, however, the large areas of the seas and oceans makes it impossible for them to monitor all related actions.
